Airship Dock in Brandenburg © Cargolifter

Berlin/Brand - The first concrete steps to build an airship "made in Brandenburg" have been taken: After one and a half years of building, CargoLifter AG has almost completed its airship dock on the site of a former Russian military airport in Briesen-Brand, approx. 60 kilometers south of Berlin. In November 2000, the "lighter-than-air" logistics company inaugurated the 360-meter long, 210-meter wide, and 107-meter high central production hangar, which is the largest self-supporting hangar in the world. Around 200 engineers are currently working on the development and preparing the assembly of the first prototypes of the transport airship CargoLifter CL 160. This 260 meter long "flying crane" will soon be transporting large and heavy goods weighing up to 160 metric tons or measuring up to 50 meters in length, 8 meters in height, and 8 meters in width.
A hangar with unique dimensions

The entire hangar conception was developed by CargoLifter together with the wholly-owned Siemens subsidiary SIAT. The building's framework consists of five steel arches covered with a recyclable semi-transparent membrane construction. More than 14,000 metric tons of steel and approx. 240 metric tons of special plastic foil were used. The hangar doors presented the architects with a special challenge. Moving sections, each 4,200 square meters in size and weighing 800 metric tons form a closed semi-circle.
The hangar covers an area of more than eight football fields. Most German skyscrapers would easily fit into the inner space. Due to the extraordinary size and dimensions of the hangar its design always had our highest priority.
From military airport to airship dock

All around the central hangar of the 500-hectare airport site in Brand you can see the infrastructure of an entire airship dock. Apart from the office buildings "Airship Design Center I and II" and the "Lighter than Air Academies" for the airship developers and on-site administration, the building consortium has constructed its own energy station for an "independent" supply of electricity and heating. Since October 2000, the power station, which is run by natural gas, can feed approx. 800 kilowatts of electricity and around eight megawatts of thermo-energy into the network of the dock.
